Located in Brisbane, Legacy Way is a 7km toll road including a 4.6km twin-tube tunnel. Each bore operates with two traffic lanes connecting the Western Freeway with the Inner City Bypass. Legacy Way operates as a free flow, user-pays system.

Project overview

Legacy Way is a 4.6km road tunnel that connects the Western Freeway at Toowong with the Inner City Bypass at Kelvin Grove. The tunnel consists of twin 12 metre bored tunnels with single entry and exit portals. A Brisbane City Council initiative, Legacy Way was built to address the growing congestion problems of Brisbane on the arterial roads of the inner city and the CBD.

Egis has been involved with the Legacy Way project since the initial project tendering phase in 2009. Our initial involvement was as O&M consultants to Transcity Joint Venture (the successful Design, Construct, Operate and Maintain contract holder).

Egis employs 50 fulltime staff on the Legacy Way project. They are involved in all aspects of the operation and maintenance of the tunnel.  Key responsibilities are:

  • Operate and maintain systems for the tunnel’s safe operation, including mechanical, electrical and ventilation systems and fire and life safety systems.
  • Respond to incidents including assisting users in breakdowns on the Legacy Way toll road.
  • Manage tunnel emergency response and interfacing with emergency services agencies.
  • Managing assets to ensure toll road availability, and lifecycle of assets
  • Liaising with regional road network managers, police, other tunnel operators, and local authorities to ensure safe and efficient roadway positive user experience.
