Operation and Maintenance

MetroLink Victoria Pty Ltd (MetroLink) was formed in 1998 to bid for one half of the Melbourne tram network following privatisation of the former Public Transport Corporation’s tram business. The company won the Yarra Trams franchise through a competitive tender and commenced operating services on 29th August 1999.  Egis held a 20% share in the concession company from 1999, selling its stake to Transdev in 2000.

Project overview

The Yarra Trams franchise scope was the operating passenger rail services incorporating above track (service delivery) and below track (infrastructure maintenance) operations. Egis role was:

Concessionaire: Metrolink Victoria Pty Ltd.  Shareholders:

  • Transdev 30%
  • Egis Projects 20%*
  • Transfield 50%

Construction: The investment was mainly limited to the acquisition of rolling-stock

Engineering: Semaly and Egis Consulting Australia (ECA)

Operation & Maintenance: Metrolink Victoria, the Concession Company, carries out directly the Operation & Maintenance of the Yarra Trams Network.

*Egis Projects share was sold to Transdev in 2000

Our missions

MetroLink objectives were to:

  • Deliver quality user experience in terms of punctuality, reliability and safety;
  • Extend services through investment in rolling stock and infrastructure (tracks and stations)
  • Rapid response and rectification of service disruptions
  • Preventative and predictive maintenance (including refurbishments) of tram assets (rolling stock, tracks and stations) to maximise asset life
  • Operation of trams including ticketing and enforcement
  • Increase patronage of Yarra Trams.
